What do you want to improve about your living space? I have Pinterest boards full of ideas. If you’re a dude, maybe you have a mental list of some guy projects you’d like to undertake: build a deck, put a workbench in the basement, etc..
I get sucked into the home improvement world easily. I honestly try to avoid watching HGTV, even though I adore a good episode of Fixer Upper as much as the next person.
The problem is that I expect too much of my home. I set the bar too high for something that
1) exists here on the soil of this earth and 2) is not going to last. I’m just setting myself up for disappointment, distraction, and even idolatry.
Scripture verses like this snap me back to reality: II Corinthians 5:1 “We know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
Did you see what word was used there? Tent. The Bible uses this word multiple times when talking about our homes and about our bodies. Picturing my home as nothing more than a ten majorly reduces my expectations of how great it should be and what it should provide me. It’s temporary.
So who cares about earthly tents? I’ve got an eternal mansion waiting for me that Jesus bought for me. I’m asking for God’s help to focus on that instead.
