Your walking stick

Pastor Nathan Nass

Do you ever use a walking stick? I never did. My own two feet are good enough, right? Until I hiked in the Narrows. The Narrows is a rushing creek that flows through a narrow canyon in Zion National Park in Utah. You walk right in the middle of the creek, with water rushing by and lots of slippery rocks beneath the surface. Not only did I use that walking stick, but I leaned on it every step of the way.

I hope you have a walking stick for life, something to rely on in every situation. Know what it is? God’s Word. A believer in God once prayed, “Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live” (Psalm 119:116). Each verse of the Bible is meant to sustain you as you walk through life.

When you’re alone, lean on your walking stick: “Surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). When you sin, lean on your walking stick: [God] is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9). When you’re scared, lean on your walking stick: “Call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you” (Psalm 50:15). When you face death, lean on your walking stick: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25).

Life is slippery. Don’t try to walk through life without the Word of God! Lean on your walking stick.
